From Beer Can to Hops Brooch

While beer tin cans, hops and jewelry seem like an uncanny intersection, it’s not so much the case with Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) graduate Juliette Même. The jewelry designer is known to probe the boundaries of materiality, value and what may seem uninteresting at first glance. Believe it or not, her hops brooch is a delicate composition constructed from the metal of old beer cans.

The brooch was a 2020 award winner by The International Society of Friends of Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (ISSP), a non-profit formed in 1997 to support Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim in many of its undertakings.

These brooches create a link between the origin of the beer, the hop blossoms and its final packaging, the can.

Since 1998, the ISSP has supported the Junge Schmuckkunst project (Art Jewelry by Young Talents), awarding jewelry artists with an independent and innovative approach. Each year, one winner is awarded a prize and the jewelry piece is donated to Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim. The museum’s collection has since expanded almost annually to include contemporary jewelry.

While in recent years ISSP members have had the opportunity to serve as jurors at the annual meeting, it was not possible in 2020 due to Covid-19 conditions, so Même was awarded by the board of directors. The Artist’s Talk offered by ISSP was also postponed in 2020, but will be reinstated in the near future.
